Emily VanCamp on Losing Everwood, Gaining Brothers & Sisters |
|
Feb 06, 2007 - 2:43 AM - by Emma
|
Indulge me while I do something completely out of character: Toot my
own horn. As you know, back in August I publicly pressured Brothers
& Sisters executive producer Greg Berlanti to cast his former
Everwood ingenue Emily VanCamp in the pivotal role of Rebecca, the
20-year-old byproduct of Holly's affair with Nora's late hubby,
William. Jump ahead five months and guess who was just tapped to play
Rebecca? That's right — Emily freakin' VanCamp! "The truth is, you do
deserve some credit," Berlanti concedes. "The candlelight vigil you've
had for her in this role really made a difference." Of course, it'd be
disingenuous for me to not point out that VanCamp — who makes her debut
on Feb. 18 — also had the support of some other influential players,
namely Berlanti, fellow executive producer Ken Olin, and VanCamp's TV
mom, Patricia Wettig. "Patty is over the moon," declares Olin of his
real-life wife and colleague. "She loves her." So how's the woman at
the center of this lovefest feeling about all this attention (read:
pressure)? Let's ask her!
Ausiello: Congratulations! Are you psyched?
Emily VanCamp: I am. It's been so crazy. It all happened in one day, so
I haven't really had time to wrap my head around it. But it's so
exciting.
Ausiello: You were in the running, out of the running, back in the running, and then you got it. What the heck happened?
VanCamp: There was talk about it a couple of months ago, first in your
column [Laughs], and then I heard it from some other people. But
nothing ever was set in stone. There was never a real offer on the
table, so I kind of put it out of my mind. And then it all just came
together at the last minute, which is how things typically happen for
me.
Ausiello: Did you have to audition?
VanCamp: No, [which] was incredibly flattering. Greg and I obviously
worked together for four years on Everwood, so he has a really good
sense of who I am and what I have to offer. I think he had confidence
that I would fit in well.
Ausiello: What have you been told about Rebecca's story?
VanCamp: It's about the dynamic between all these brothers and sisters
who grew up together, and then this newcomer who is trying to fit in
and understand the family and get to know everybody. I can only imagine
it being a very odd experience knowing that you share blood with these
people, but you have no idea who they are.
Ausiello: How is Rebecca different from Amy?
VanCamp: Amy grew up in small-town America, and this young gal grew up
in Los Angeles. It's a completely different mentality. And I think
there's a lot more maturity there, which is exciting for me.

Scott Wolf of 'The 'Nine': 'A face' becomes an actor |
|
Nov 10, 2006 - 4:10 PM - by Emma
|
The great TV actors are never out of work for long. They migrate from series to series.
Take Scott Wolf, who has starred on Party of Five, Everwood, and now The Nine. Not a bad resume.
Hard to believe that grand career arc was launched one fateful night
when macho icon Burt Reynolds squeezed Wolf's head like a casaba melon.
Shortly after graduating from college, Wolf drove to Los Angeles to see
if he could make it in showbiz. "I had done a Frosted Flakes commercial
and a McDonald's ad," he says, "and was living from check to check on
the residuals."
The guy who managed his funky apartment complex worked for Reynolds,
who at the time was starring in the sitcom Evening Shade. The manager
asked the fledgling actor if he'd like to meet the legend.
The introduction took place outside a local theater as a play was
letting out. Reynolds was on the sidewalk, surrounded by fans. "The guy
said, 'Burt, Burt, c'mere; I want you to meet a friend of mine. This is
Scott Wolf,' " Wolf recalls. "He walked up to me and grabbed my face in
both hands. Loni Anderson was next to him. He pointed my head over at
Loni and said, 'Is that a face?' And she goes, 'That's a face.' He
patted me on the shoulder and walked off. I went home and called my mom
and said, 'Burt Reynolds just grabbed my head!' "

'The O.C.' has a Bright idea |
|
Oct 23, 2006 - 3:44 PM - by Emma
|
Oh Bright, what happened to your curly, fluffy hair?
Chrispratt Witness the new look of Chris Pratt, formerly Bright Abbott
on "Everwood." He sported a standard jock look on that show, but for
his new gig on "The O.C.," he’s got more of a scruffy tree-hugger
ensemble going on, complete with fuzzy beard and beret.
In Season 4 of "The O.C.," which begins [date corrected here] Nov. 2,
Pratt plays Che, an environmental activist at Brown University; that’s
where he gets to know Summer Roberts (Rachel Bilson).
Seth Cohen (Adam Brody), on the other hand, is working at a local comic
book store and hanging out with Summer’s dad for kicks. How exciting
does that sound? Surely it will provide the opportunity for much
pop-cultural quippage.
Fistsoffury Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie) is apparently using the
fists of fury to deal with his grief over the death of Marissa, as
evidenced by this image of Ryan about to pummel someone. Even though
"The O.C." ran out of juice well before the middle of Season 3, it’s
still good to see the old reliable fists of fury.
"The O.C." has a new crop of kiddies now that Marissa’s gone; Kaitlin
Cooper, Marissa’s little sis, is still around and Taylor Townsend
(Autumn Reeser) will have a bigger role this year as well. Apparently
R&B singer Chris Brown is involved somehow in Season 4; the press
kit lists him as "Will Tutt," who, according to Zap2it.com, gets
involved with Kaitlin.

Your Favorite TV Show, Only Dirtier |
|
Oct 23, 2006 - 3:41 PM - by Emma
|
The best episode of "Everwood" you've never seen, "Nearing Grace"
provides a fix for addicts of the now cancelled WB series who've been
aching for their favorite show since it went off the air.
Starring "Everwood" lead Gregory Smith in the Ephram-like role of Henry
Nearing, this movie has all the hallmarks of that show: small-town
life, confused dads, dead moms, and hurting sons engaging in snappy
patter with their sexually and emotionally blunt girlfriends. This
being a motion picture, there's more explicit sex and drug use, but
otherwise this is the "Everwood" feature film that never was. It
probably doesn't help that Mr. Smith was playing Ephram in Season 3 of
"Everwood" while simultaneously shooting "Nearing Grace."
Henry is that stalwart of the indie movie: a bright, young cutie-pie
with a limitless vocabulary stuck in a small town. In this case, his
prison cell is New Jersey, and his warden is his father, Shep, who's
lost in alcoholic free-fall after the death of his wife. Dropping out
of school to discover the meaning of life, Henry winds up entangled in
sex games between a lethal hottie (Jordana Brewster) and her
lacrosse-playing boyfriend (Chad Faust). Henry also has to deal with an
acid-head brother (David Moscow) and a best friend (Ashley Johnson)
who's in love with him.
It all sounds a bit like a John Hughes movie gone ultra-serious, like
"Some Kind of Wonderful" forced to crossbreed with "Pretty in Pink,"
and its metaphor for escape is so ham-handed that only Mr. Hughes could
have come up with it: Henry has a plane and a pilot's license and he
dreams of running away on it and flying from town to town across
America. Like an overachieving class valedictorian, "Nearing Grace"
isn't even content to settle for one teen movie ending, and instead has
two: a prom night blowout and a graduation ceremony speech that's (wait
for it) straight from the heart.
